Lesson 1 — What the UAE layer is

Two UAE companies rarely need the same software. One files a VAT return and nothing else. Another pays staff through the Wage Protection System, prints cheques for its landlord, tracks a trade licence that expires every year, and will be sending e-invoices before long. A country pack that installed all of that on everybody would bury the work you actually have under the work you do not.

The mental model: one page of switches. Odoone Localization — United Arab Emirates (odoone_l10n_ae) is the UAE country pack for the Odoone suite, and it is the single place from which UAE features are turned on and off. Installing the pack switches nothing on. It exposes the toggles and forces no feature module on you; every decision after that is yours to make.

The click path. Go to Apps, search for Odoone Localization — United Arab Emirates, and press Install — the technical name is odoone_l10n_ae. Its dependencies come with it automatically, so there is nothing to install first. Then open Settings › UAE. That app sits directly after the Odoone app in the Settings sidebar, which is the quickest way to find it the first time you look.

What the page does, and all it does. Tick a feature and its module installs. Untick a feature and Odoo prompts you to uninstall that module. There is nothing else to fill in on this page — no fields, no defaults, no wizard behind it. It is a list of features and a column of boxes, and each ticked feature carries its own configuration inside its own module.

The same page has three ways in, because different people arrive from different places:

  1. Settings › UAE — the page itself, and where the rest of this course assumes you are standing.
  2. Settings › Odoone › Localization — the United Arab Emirates entry here carries a Configure the UAE localization button that jumps straight to the same page.
  3. Accounting › Configuration — the pack adds UAE Settings as the first item in that menu, plus a United Arab Emirates grouping menu that the individual feature modules reparent their own configuration menus under. That grouping menu is where the configuration you still have to do will appear.

Unticking is never silent. Untick a feature and Odoo shows its standard uninstall prompt for that module. Unticking never silently removes data — you confirm the uninstall. Nothing about a UAE feature leaves your database without you answering a dialog first, and that is worth knowing on day one, because it is the difference between a page you are afraid to touch and a page you can read honestly.

Worked example. Marina Ridge Trading LLC installs the pack on a Sunday morning. Nothing visible changes anywhere in the database except that a UAE page now exists in Settings, listing features with every box unticked. The finance manager's first reaction is that the install did not work. It did: an installed pack with nothing ticked is exactly what this pack is meant to look like before you have made a single decision.

The failure mode. "I ticked VAT 201 & Corporate Tax and none of my tax settings are filled in." Nothing has gone wrong. The toggle installs the feature module; it does not configure it. Open that module's own configuration to set it up — and take that module's own course, because configuration is where the real work of UAE compliance lives. Lesson 3 tells you which course that is for every one of the twelve toggles.

Commenting is not enabled on this course.
