Lesson 3 — The MICR clear band: the bottom 16 mm is not yours

One measurement in this course is worth committing to memory, and this is it: the bottom 16 mm of the leaf belongs to the bank.

What is down there. The strip along the foot of the leaf carries the bank's pre-printed magnetic line — the MICR line — and it must stay empty so the clearing scanner can read it. The bank prints it in magnetic ink before the leaf ever reaches you. Anything your printer puts across it is, from the scanner's point of view, noise laid over the one part of the cheque a machine actually reads. MISSING FACT: the instrument or banking standard that fixes the reserved band at the foot of a UAE cheque leaf and the dimension it prescribes. The module guides document the 16 mm the software reserves; they cite no source for it, so neither does this course.

How the module handles it. Elements are kept out of the bottom 16 mm, which is reserved for the bank's pre-printed MICR line and must stay empty. That is a floor the designer holds for you, not something you have to remember on every element you place.

A warning about the band is a prompt, not a failure. If you are told an element sits inside the band, that is an instruction to check against your real leaf — not a rejection, and not a defect. Leaves vary, and the software is telling you plainly that it cannot see yours. Take the leaf, measure up from its bottom edge, and decide with the paper in your hand. It is the leaf's bottom edge you measure from, not the top of the page or the edge of the sheet the leaf was cut from.

The click path. Checking the band takes one pass in the designer.

  1. Upload a scan of a real leaf as a background preview, so the designer shows your leaf beneath the elements rather than a blank rectangle.
  2. Open the designer and look at the foot of the layout: nothing of yours belongs in the bottom 16 mm.
  3. If anything is flagged as sitting inside the band, hold the printed result against the real leaf before you move it. The measurement on the paper decides.

The worked example. Take a leaf out of a spoiled chequebook and spend two minutes with a ruler. You are answering three questions, and the answers belong in a note kept beside the template.

What to measure on your own leaf Why it matters

If the magnetic line on your bank's leaf sits comfortably inside the reserved strip, you have room to spare and nothing to do. If it reaches higher than 16 mm, the reserved strip is not generous enough for that bank and everything of yours has to move up. That is a decision about where fields sit on the leaf — which is design, and Lesson 4 is about the other kind of problem entirely.

The failure mode. The damaging response to a band warning is to treat it as a blocking error and drag every element upward until the message goes away. You end up with a cheque crowded into the top half and empty paper in the middle, and you still do not know whether the original position was wrong. The opposite failure is dismissing the warning without ever laying a leaf on the desk. Both are versions of the same mistake: deciding on a screen something only paper can answer.
