Lesson 4 — The UAE VAT category is set, never guessed
The stake. Beside the amounts, the tax invoice prints a category column, and it is the column a reviewer uses to check that a supply was treated the way you say it was treated. A blank there is an omission. A wrong letter there is an assertion — and a wrong category on a tax invoice is worse than a blank one, which is why nothing in this pack will fill that column by inference.
The mental model. The category comes from the tax's own UAE VAT category, whose values are S/Z/E/O/AE. The guides name those five codes and do not expand them, so neither does this course: the tax you already use for a supply carries the category that belongs to that supply, and choosing a letter because it looks close is precisely the move the design refuses to make on your behalf. If you are not certain which code applies to a supply, that is a question for your tax advisor, not a field to fill in optimistically.
Where to look. Open the tax and set its UAE VAT category. Not the invoice, not the template, not the tax group — the tax. One tax carries one category, and every document that uses that tax inherits it from then on, which is why this is a five-minute job done once rather than a decision repeated per invoice.
The worked example is a reading exercise. Print one invoice and look at three things in the summary block.
| What the form shows | What it is telling you | Where the fix is |
|---|---|---|
| The category column is blank | The tax carries no UAE VAT category | On the tax |
| One combined row marked for review | One tax group holds more than one category | On the tax groups, one per category |
| A category letter you did not expect | The tax genuinely carries that category | On the tax, once you know which code is right |
The failure mode. The category column is blank, and somebody proposes to solve it in the template — hard-coding a letter into the form, or writing it into a footer. That converts a visible gap into an invisible assertion, and it prints on every document that uses the form, including the ones where the letter is wrong. Set the category on the tax. A blank column is a gap you can close in one field; a wrong column is a document you have already sent.
The idea to carry forward: the form reports the category, the tax decides it, and no software in this pack will guess between them.
